Forchtenstein
Castle Forchtenstein Castle is considered the landmark of Burgenland. Forchtenstein Castle was built in the 13th century. At that time it was a Hungarian border castle and stands above the Rosaliengebirge. In the following Turkish wars, the castle served as the most important bulwark in the west. In the early 17th century the Esterházy family took overthe castle. Forchtenstein is still owned by the family to this day. The first generation of owners expanded the castle for defensive but also representative purposes and chose it as the family headquarters. Since the family moved in there have been numerous family properties in the castle. The treasury pieces and collections of military loot is of great value. This is how the castle was given the nickname “Tresor” by the Esterházy family.
The Haydn House
Another monument in Burgenland that is well worth seeing is the famous Haydn House in Eisenstadt. The famous Joseph Haydn lived here. Today there is a permanent exhibition and annual special exhibitions here. Of course, this is about the life and work of the composer and musician Joseph Haydn.
Burgenland State Museum
Anyone interested in the history and traditions of Burgenland should definitely visit the State Museum. Several thousand people visit the State Museum every year. The newly created rooms such as the media and event room and the museum shop are also part of this redesign. Guided tours are now also offered and activities related to topics. In the State Museum of Burgenland, topics such as: Life pictures – what is typically Burgenland? picked up. The second tour deals with the motto L iving Spaces – The Development of the Economy, People and Culture. Also “traces of life”is extremely interesting because it deals with the archaeological traces of Burgenland.
The special highlight of the museum, however, is an accessible replica of the Windner Bear Cave. An Ice Age bear skeleton was once found here.
The Roman quarry
The Roman quarry in St. Margarethen has always been very popular. Here you can literally get an insight into the history of the earth. You don’t get to see an impressive natural spectacle like the Wildenstein waterfall every day. If you want to see this waterfall in Carinthia up close, you only have to accept a 15-minute climb. After this short hike, you can see the full splendor of the falling water. The deafening roar of the waterfall has already impressed many thousands of visitors. The waterfall has a fall height of 54 meters. The water flows into a reservoir and can thus be used to generate electricity.
The “Wildenstein” ruin
The ruin “Wildenstein” is right near the famous waterfall. A path leads from the waterfall to the Hochobir mountain. This again takes about a quarter of an hour, depending on the marching speed. In this way you can discover and enjoy the wonderful nature and landscape on a walk. Wildenstein Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1275 and was probably destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). However, it is not clear until when the castle was used or inhabited.
The Marienkirche
Even vacationers who are not church lovers must have seen this church. The Marienkirche is open to all visitors as a pilgrimage church and is located on a peninsula of the Wörthersee. The Marienkirche is famous for its baroque high altar from the 17th century and the crypt underneath. The cross altar is also baroque and has a Gothic crucifix from the 16th century.
The magnificently designed pulpit is particularly worth seeing. It dates from 1761 and inspires every visitor to the church. The Marienkirche was built at the end of the 9th century and has a moving history.
Action and fun for everyone – the high ropes course
Those who prefer to experience action in their free time or who want to offer the family a special excursion on vacation should visit the high ropes course. This promises adventure for young and old. The park has several courses that have to be mastered. Among other things, you can test your high wire skills from 3 – 8 meters above the ground.
If you want to be really active, you can take part in the Flying Fox. Here you “fly” through a rope construction twice 160 meters across the lake below.
The high safety standards and the stable construction of the girders ensure a great feeling and absolute safety.
