Brakes

One of the systems most important you have your bike are brakes, there are various types and paradigms that have several elements in common. This guide will address the most used in urban cycling.

The main paradigm of performance is based on a system of levers, lanyards and roller brake, on Bicyclebazzar, the three most commonly used systems are grouped in the urban cycling: V-Brake, of Horseshoe and Cantilever.

Brake V-Brake

These three systems operate under the same principle, a piola or cable transmits the energy that we use to operate the handle of the brake to a system that tightens the bicycle ring on both sides using roller skates or pills, causing friction to brake the wheel.

Cantilever brake

To be several groups working on computer in the braking system, it is highly convenient to maintain its good performance which can give an optimal response.

Horse-shoe brake

You must also take into account that as members of a team, these working groups must be compatible, if not never will work correctly.

Group 1: handles and brakes

The handles are a kind of interface that translates our strength to the system of tightening pills making the wheel finally stop. The handles must be in accordance with the system of torque that you use. If you have a V-Brake system, the handles must be designed for that system and thus with the Cantilever and Horseshoe. It is important to consider that the handles are of good quality, hopefully with the minimum of plastic components (this goes for systems of press also) and above all that you deliver comfort to braking. As a good translator of force, must easily interpret the strength that you are delivering and transmit it to the system of tightening unless you should make greater effort.

Group 2: covers, lanyards, and cables

This group is responsible for transmitting the force applied on the handles towards the system of tightening. The friction between the sleeve and the piola should be minimum and to achieve it is necessary that there is a correct lubrication of the piola. We must do this at the time of installing it to the inside of the sleeve using any of the following lubricants:

  • Fat more W-40 (keeps liquid FAT)
  • Oil with teflon
  • Liquid grease with teflon

Some brands of bags, such as Shimano, include fat in one end, in this way the piola is completely lubricated at the time to be installed.

Today it is much easier to get covers with plastic interiors, which greatly help minimize friction. You can get this in any specialized store, and is known under the name of sleeve with Teflon.

Another detail to consider is the length and curvature of the covers; a case with too much curve will increase the friction between piola and this, the correct length is one that provides a gentle curve and allows us to bend the handle completely.

The sleeves have a limited life and should be replaced when they are broken, destroyed tips, with dirty inside or without lubrication.

The cool model depends on the type of handle you use, if you have brake V-brake or Cantilever, you must use the piola called barrel head.

For the brake handles used road bikes, you must use a Weinnman type piola.

Commonly the fishing break at the ends, in union with the handles or on the brake setting, so you must be attentive to the State showing.

Group 3: skates (pills) and rims

The pills work in coordination with the surface of the rim designed for this purpose. Work well the skates, these must be aligned perfectly with the rim, both surfaces must be clean and in good condition.

One of the major damage that happens is known as crystallization of the skates, this is basically produced by the heating system. In one intense and prolonged braking wheels considerably increase its temperature, this produces dust, between the rim and skate, to crystallize and as a result, there is a loss of efficiency in braking and sometimes annoying chirp.

But the solution is so simple, just enough to lightly sand brake Skate off brightness, thing restore its porous texture.

The brake pads have a limited life, even more so if conditions are wet or with mud, must be changed before arriving at disappear drawing or gutters. If you do not change them in time it is likely that exposed the metal part of the skate, which would seriously damage the rim.

You keep in mind that if you decide to change the brake pads, you will have to change the pair since in this way the approach of skates will be symmetrical.

Another factor that can cause an inefficient braking is that the contact surface of the skate on the rim of this dirty, due to dust or earth, the existing oil in the streets (motor vehicles) or the oil of your same cleta. The solution is also quite simple, it is arranged simply by cleaning the rim with desengrasaste; the common and wild lava crockery will be useful.

Detection of problems

Each brake type has its own system of adjustment, allowing you to tune the team to achieve their optimum performance. There are general principles and other specific to each system. Before placing newly purchased tools and our hands on the brakes, it is important that you learn to detect the malfunction of your brakes. Here are some clues:

Skates must be parallel to the braking surface and located in a same angle of attack is to say must be symmetry in the set. They must not touch the tire or partially touching the rim

Photography

Brake shoes , must play at the same time the braking surface and at the same distance at rest.

To achieve this it is necessary to tighten or loosen the adjusting screws, (photo) If adjustment screw has no need to twist the brake so you win or lose tension spring, in the case of horse-shoe brakes need to be adjusted against nut.

Brake squeals can be due to several causes, not parallel skates, water, loose mechanisms, crystallized skates with brakes.

Other types of brakes

Torpedo brake or coaster: This system is built into the rear hub, this type of brake does not need much maintenance, but it is necessary to constantly review the chain, without chain there is no brake, is a still very current system and it is quite effective, although its use is simple, mechanics is something complicated, beware of losing parts to disarming.

Drum brake: it is widely used in European and Japanese urban bikes, works with cool, is not affected with rain, but it is difficult to reach the power of a V-brake. Easy mechanics, however, spare interiors are difficult to obtain in the Chilean market.

Brake discs: Now very popular in the mountain, wet bikes is the best choice, is necessary a framework, maza and handles specific in some cases, but always for the same price of a disc brake, you get a very good V-brake.

Technique and ergonomics.

The front brake is responsible for much of the total braking, the best technique to use is to not apply any force, what porvocaria the wheel lock which could cause you to lose control of the bike. A common mishap between riders who have gone from a poor braking system to one powerful, are campaign returns, apply the same force they had in their previous brakes with the subsequent fall.

The position of the handle should be comfortable. These must not be parallel to the ground as you assume a position which is not very comfortable with your wrist. It is right that the handle follow the line of the arm when you’re sitting on your vehicle that your wrists will follow the natural position of your arms.
